Marvelocity is an apt title for Alex Ross’ latest career-spanning book that showcases his amazing work for Marvel Comics. Marvelocity is a psuedo-sequel to Ross’ previous volume, Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross and it can be said that both sides are now given equal representation. Marvelocity is a massive 315 page hardcover that documents Ross’ evolution as a Marvel Comics aficianado and artist. Marvelocity opens with Ross’ childhood illustrations and shines a light on how his creative process developed. You’ll get a kick out of his paper figures and early pieces which are still to be envied.
Marvelocity delves into Ross’ influences, (Jack Kirby) and offers a cool comparison between Kirby covers and Ross’ reinterpretations. From there, Marvelocity breaks down Ross’ art by looking at character specific and team based illustrations. Speaking of the illustrations, Marvelocity’s presentation of Alex Ross’ art is amazing, everything from the gatefold dust cover to the including artwork was gorgeous. Marvelocity is highly recommended for fans of the comics genre and for those who enjoy quality illustrations.
