Walrus is a Canadian band and their new single “Cool To You” is part 60’s pastiche and somewhat psychedelic in a melody-heavy sort of way. The video showcases Instagram comedian Jackson Briggs vamping in front of sports cars in a parking lot and sort of illustrating the lyrics in a melancholy way…if you’re inclined to believe that.
Following tips in the US from the likes of Stereogum, Vice and Consequence of Sound, Walrus’s jovial new clip perfectly highlights the band’s impish knack for tongue-in-cheek humour – featuring Instagram comedian Jackson Briggs, the video was shot with StanceEast Car Group in the band’s hometown with Jackson throwing some heavyposing in front of Need For Speed-kitted out cars.
Winding through the sonics of Woods’ and Real Estate’s-tinged 60s psych-pop, the track thematically addresses the notion of consistently making bad decisions in life and trying to frame new excuses for each choice – something everyone occasionally falls prey too, I’m sure. “It’s about having too much fun and too often, and then never being able to keep the plans or promises you made,” explains vocalist, Justin Murphy. “Always trying to put pieces back together and asking yourself ‘could anyone think this is cool?'”
The new single lands just ahead of US/CAN festival dates this summer which sees the band sharing bills with the likes of A Place To Bury Strangers and Dead Meadow. These dates follow a recent headline US run and spot headlining Toronto’s NXNE festival – UK dates are set to come this autumn/winter following the album’s release.
