Ride has shared a new song entitled “Repetition” today and while I’m a fan of their older material, this song leaves me wanting more of that sound. I get the post-punkish updated sound and the motifs that relate to this particular track but I’m finding it fairly heavy-handed. Am I showing my age? Possibly. I guess adapting to something new is difficult at times. Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh, I’ll let you judge.
Speaking on “Repetition,” singer Andy Bell says:
“I haven’t got tired yet of blasting this track. “Repetition” is at the absolute heart of ‘This Is Not A Safe Place.’ It was one of the very first songs written for the album, and has always felt to me like one of the best songs I’ve written. It has a great dual harmony vocal from myself and Mark. Steve came up with the brilliant Juno 6 bassline that starts the song, which he overdubbed on our last day of recording for the album, Loz puts down a monster of a drum track, it’s both very experimental and very pop in approach and that’s what Ride always tried to do in the early days. For me it succeeds in bringing me back to all of the things we were into and talked about when we were 18, but also being of the moment, in 2019. I know I am speaking for the whole band, and Erol, when I say we are really proud of this record, and we hope you enjoy it.” “Repetition” also arrives ahead of Ride’s upcoming North American tour. Beginning September 16th in Detroit, the band will play 21 dates across the States with stops in Toronto, Brooklyn, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, before concluding October 16th in Santa Ana. This Is Not A Safe Place, due August 16th via Wichita Recordings, is produced by 2017’s Weather Diaries collaborator Erol Alkan and is the fourth of the band’s albums mixed by Alan Moulder. Coming together at the end of 2018 and start of 2019, they gathered influences from the Jean Michel Basquiat exhibition at London’s Barbican Centre and the post punk sound of The Fall and Sonic Youth, for an album rich in their trademark shoegaze atmosphere, whilst simultaneously sounding rejuvenated and creatively ambitious.
