You may recognize the illustrious Thundercat from The Book of Boba Fett where he played the mod parlor technician. You also may recognize Thundercat (Stephen Bruner) from the many Bass Player magazine articles that he has appeared in. You also might recognize him if you’re an indie elitist. You also might just think that The Broad Museum is simply amazing. Is it possible that I consider myself for all of these categories? Regardless, Thundercat is going to appear at The Broad on July 21st! Read all the details below and pick up some tickets in the process!!!
In celebration of Takashi Murakami: Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow, self-described Japanophile and two-time Grammy-winning musician Thundercat will play a live set at The Broad Museum exemplifying the unexpected and genre-defying nature he has become known for. Sharing the bill will be a performance by Ginger Root, who combines influences of Japanese City Pop and the days of Stax and Philly Soul, for a fresh take on the ever-evolving Bedroom Pop scene. This is a rare, smaller play for Thundercat and a great way to spend a summer night. The evening starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $40 and available HERE.
The full museum will be open as part of your admission.Throughout the evening, you can wander the first floor galleries to view Takashi Murakami, the artist’s first solo exhibition at The Broad Museum. The exhibition, which includes all of Murakami’s works in the Broad collection and key loans, features works spanning sculpture, painting, wallpaper, and immersive installations and explores subject matter such as globalization, postwar Japan, pop culture, and religious iconography.
This event is 21+ with valid I.D. The cash bar on the East West Bank Plaza at The Broad and the museum doors open at 8 p.m.
ABOUT THUNDERCAT
Two-time Grammy winning artist Thundercat is a self-described Japanophile, bass guitarist, singer, songwriter, and actor from Los Angeles. A cornerstone of the Brainfeeder label, he first came to prominence as a member of crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies and has since released four solo studio albums. He is noted for his work with producer Flying Lotus and his appearances on Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly. He has worked with artists including Ariana Grande, Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole, Pedro Martins, and Zack Fox. Thundercat has performed at Meltdown Festival, Glastonbury, Coachella, Primavera Sound, Sónar, Fuji Rock, Newport Jazz Festival, and Governors Ball. The name Thundercat is a reference to the cartoon he’s loved since childhood and an extension of his wide-eyed, vibrant, often superhuman approach to his craft. In 2020, things came full circle when Bruner voiced a character (and penned a song) named “Grune the Destroyer” in Cartoon Network’s Thundercats Roar animated series.
