Last month, Ichiko Aoba released her new album, Luminescent Creatures via hermine / Psychic Hotline, garnering praise from Pitchfork, The New York Times, The Cut, The FADER, Bandcamp, and beyond, cementing its place as one of the year’s most celebrated albums so far.
Today, Aoba shares her performance of the “beautiful yet heart-wrenching” (Paste) album highlight “SONAR” for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s #LateShowMeMusic Series. Aoba’s mesmerizing performance previews her world tour in support of Luminescent Creatures. Next month, Aoba kicks off the North American leg in Honolulu, with stops in Brooklyn, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and more, before wrapping up in Mexico City in May. A full list of dates can be found below and tickets are on sale now.
Luminescent Creatures explores the origin of life with dreamy musical vistas. While visiting Japan’s Ryukyu Archipelago and conducting field research, Ichiko was enamored by the boundless beauty—and occasional terror—of the ocean. She’d go diving with only the breath in her lungs, submitting herself to the whims of the tides. “I feel unable to resist the pull of the ocean,” Ichiko says, “but know how easy it would be for my small body to be swallowed by the sea.” That contradiction, gentleness and power, instilled a sense of awe that is expressed in the soundscapes of Luminescent Creatures.
