Lucrecia Dalt announces her new album, A Danger to Ourselves, out September 5th on RVNG Intl., and today shares the new single/video “divina.” Following ¡Ay!, Dalt’s 2022 breakthrough sci-fi bolero album, A Danger to Ourselves is a fearless reflection on the unfiltered complexities of human connection. Stripping away fictional narratives present on the artist’s last several albums, A Danger to Ourselves arrives from a place of emotional sincerity. Sonically unraveling like a deeply personal conversation, Dalt’s voice is formidable, supported by a lush array of acoustic orchestration and processing, collaged percussive patterns, and an esteemed cast of collaborators.
A Danger to Ourselves reveals Dalt’s uncompromising quest for sonic clarity where bold production choices and meticulous recording techniques encourage both voice and instrument to harmonize with newfound depth. Dalt’s poetic instinct ushers in an unobstructed focus on the music itself as vocals vibrate past the songs’parameters, observing the beaded echoes of primal, romantic thrill. “In the past, I often turned to movies and texts as mirrors to shape my stories, guiding me away from revealing too much from within, inventing isolated fictions,” notes Dalt. “This time, I wanted to create music that flows cinematically and sets a landscape to tell a love story that flirts with improbability, the miraculous and the mysterious.”
Following the previously released “ cosa rara (ft. david sylvian),” today’s single “divina” further hints at the album’s tonal core. Flowing between Spanish and English, it’s an unconventional doo-wop love song where staccato piano notes and finger snaps groove against cascading electric guitar. “divina” dances among images of fire, the underworld, and a profession of love—reflections appear and dissolve like fractured mirrors as meaning flickers and transforms throughout the song.
“divina” arrives with a video conceptualized by Lucrecia and directed by Southwestern filmmaker Tony Lowe. The video features Lucrecia and multi-disciplinary artist Lucia Maher-Tatar in a theater of complex devotion. As the poet Rumi said, “Love is a mirror… you see nothing except your real face.”
A Danger to Ourselves emerged while on tour for ¡Ay! and during the formative moments of a new relationship. A web of emotional revelations, each composition is an indicator of vulnerability where Dalt’s voice embodies revelation across new harmonic territories. The album’s sonic architecture builds upon dynamic drum loops provided by collaborator Alex Lázaro, whose percussive backbone became a canvas for Dalt’s layered vocals. Rather than following conventional melodic structures, the album generates musicality through the interplay of bass lines, rhythms, and compositional design. It’s a collaborative collage with contributions from numerous acclaimed artists: Sylvian plays a dual role of co-producer and musician, while other collaborators include Juana Molina, Camille Mandoki, and Eliana Joy.
Dalt’s adventurous sound has spun into increasingly accomplished terrains with Anticlines (2018), No era sólida (2020), and ¡Ay! (2022). Along the way, Dalt expanded her practice into scoring for films like On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (2024), HBO series The Baby (2022), and the forthcoming psychological horror Rabbit Trap, while creating sound installations and performances that showcase her luminous modulations and distinctive, evolving vocal approach.
