More reflective, please. I don’t know how I could be any more reflective perhaps I will align reflectors to my bicycle. Westerman presents “Nevermind,” the third single from his new album, A Jackal’s Wedding, out November 7th via Partisan Records. On the heels of an initial tour supporting Nation of Language, Westerman expands his spring North American headline tour, adding shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the Pacific Northwest. A full list of dates are below and tickets are available here. Following last month’s single “About Leaving,” which showcased “foreboding piano chords and Westerman’s pristinely smooth vocals” (Stereogum) and synthy lead single “Adriatic,” “Nevermind” unveils yet another side of A Jackal’s Wedding. One of the album’s most stripped-back acoustic moments, it trades sonic density for lyrical precision, pairing a quiet, understated arrangement with some of Westerman’s most cutting observations. “‘Nevermind’ is a smirking, bitter little song ruminating on the denigration of meaning by bad agents,” explains Westerman. Written largely in Athens and recorded over five weeks on the Greek island of Hydra with producer Marta Salogni (Björk, The xx, Sampha), A Jackal’s Wedding is humid, nocturnal and deeply influenced by place. A Jackal’s Wedding gestated in a time of moving from London to Greece (his home for several years before a recent move to Milan), providing a rich new environment and a new set of themes and concerns. He drew upon his unfamiliar surroundings to work his way into the album’s central concept: We can never really hit pause on real life, and things never get so predictable or stable as we’d like to think. Instead, it is all in flux, forever punctuated by tiny moments of stillness, awe, harmony. Westerman wraps fragments of his own experiences in characters – some trepidatious of unknown possibilities and some invigorated. As each of these characters embark on their own voyages, so too do the snapshots sketch an arc for Westerman himself, growing to a newfound sense of comfort with the ground constantly shifting beneath our feet, the idea that everything is always changing around us out of our control. “I see this as a process of continually learning,” he says. Everything is in motion, Westerman leaving and revisiting farflung homes, evolving then evolving again, seeing things that shouldn’t exist, returning with an album that could only come from him. Several events are on the horizon surrounding the release of A Jackal’s Wedding. Partisan Records in coordination with In Sheep’s Clothing HiFi will host a series of early listening sessions in select cities. More information can be found here. Additionally, Westerman has announced an intimatein-store performance at Rough Trade in London on November 13th. Details and tickets are available here. A Jackal’s Wedding Album Listening Events Tue.
