On Saturday, December 4, adidas Honoring Black Excellence and the Liberty City Optimist Club gathered friends and family to unveil a mural recognizing Yolanda Bethune and Tameika Wiley, Director and Program Manager of the Club’s after school program.
Guests were invited to participate in the unveiling, removing flowers from the mural wall to reveal a poignant image of the Warriors painted by Brandon Breaux (Best known for his work with Chance The Rapper). Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, co-founder of the Liberty City Optimist Club and founder 2 Live Crew, was one of many speakers who highlighted the impact that Bethune and Wiley’s have made on the program through their leadership.
Liberty City Optimist Club has built a thirty-year legacy of providing underserved communities with various sport and after school programs that has extended far beyond Florida. Since its founding, the Club and its iconic Liberty City Warriors has become a proven breeding ground for the future NFL elite—showcased today in alumni Chad Johnson, Amari Cooper, Teddy Bridgewater and Devante Freeman. LeBron James and Maverick Carter went on to profile the organization in 2018 via their lauded docuseries, Warriors of Liberty City. Bethune and Wiley found themselves in leadership positions at the Club after seeing the positivity it brought to their own sons’ lives.
A commemorative zine was provided to guests after the ceremony, which charted the Liberty City Optimist Club’s saga from its birth to today, as well as the meaningful change it brought to thousands of kids in the community.
